Statistics show there are over 4.5 million tobacco users in the US alone. By 2025, there would be over 1.6 billion users worldwide if this trend continues.

This is a staggering amount of tobacco users with annual health cost reaching into the billions every year due to smoking related diseases. Despite gallant efforts by health organizations and the federal government to heighten awareness of the dangers of smoking, the smoking population continues to increase at an alarming rate.

Focus needs to shift from trying to get smokers to quit, to offering an alternative. The best alternative in existence today are electronic cigarettes more commonly known as “ecigarettes”.

An electronic cigarette is an alternative to smoked tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars and pipes. It is a smokeless battery powered device that provides inhaled doses of nicotine by delivering a vaporized propylene glycol/nicotine solution. This vapor provides a flavor and all the physical sensations of inhaled tobacco smoke, while no smoke, tobacco or combustion is actually involved in its operation.

An electronic cigarette usually takes the form of an elongated tube, and most are designed to resemble real smoking products like cigarettes, pipes and cigars. They are reusable devices with replaceable and refillable parts. A number of manufacturers have developed a disposable version as well, making the action of smoking and throwing it away more realistic.

When a smoker inhales through the device, air flow is detected by a sensor which activates a heating element that vaporizes a nicotine solution stored in the mouth piece. On some models equipped with an LED light, the LED light is activated during the inhalation process simulating the glow of actual burning tobacco. There are excellent statistics coming out of the electronic cigarette industry, proving the use of these devices emits only about 20 harmless ingredients, as compared to the 400 ingredients, 60 of which are extremely deadly from traditional tobacco products, ingredients such as carbon monoxide an other carcinogens.

Like any other tobacco related product, there are manufacturing and labeling guidelines that minimizes access to this device by minors. The threat of it being available to our youth population is almost non existent because of the need to produce ID when purchasing, just like you would if purchasing traditional tobacco products.

The “ecigarette” is the hope to averting deaths from the prolonged use of tobacco products. It is the best alternative being offered to the tobacco smoking population if used prudently. By encouraging the use of these devices, the success rate of converting tobacco users will be much greater.

Scott Marino was lately puffing away on a cigarette when an employee told him he couldn’t smoke in the shop according to the Detroit News. The 43-year-old declared “no problem” — because the cigarette wasn’t real.

Marino hasn’t smoked in a bit more than a month due in part to electronic or e-cigarettes, which offer a nonflammable, tar- and tobacco-free alternative to normal cigarettes. Powered by a lithium battery, the cigarette contains a liquid nicotine cartridge, a “glowing” end and smoke-like vapors.

“It’s a great option, particularly given the state considering a smoking ban,” said Marino, who smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day for 25 years. “You can smoke it in restaurants or work, and carry it around with you and not need a lighter.”

Nicotine and all things tobacco are hot issues. In June, the FDA gained new authority to regulate tobacco products. Taxes on a variety of tobacco goods are going up, and Florida added an additional $1 tax on cigarette packs Wednesday.

President Barack Obama recently vented about his struggle to quit smoking, saying he doesn’t smoke in front of his kids, “but there are times I mess up.”

Electronic Cigarette – A Non Smokers Verdict

The ongoing saga surrounding the electronic cigarette continues apace, without any resolution appearing imminent it seems. Some governments are even recommending that companies do not continue to market them until they have been tested by health organisations and officially declared safe.

My father, a non smoker, developed lung cancer and died as a result of passive smoking and I am a non smoker myself. From the outside looking in it does appear nothing short of incredible that the electronic cigarette is not being embraced by governments and health officials the world over.

If the electronic cigarette companies are to be believed (and perhaps eventually proved officially correct) then the potential of the electronic cigarette is huge. Life changing and possibly even world changing stuff! My political views may well be very naïve but if a world existed where decisions were based simply on what we currently know then surely this debate would be a no brainer!

It would seem a fair point that the vast majority (there are always exceptions) of the smoking population would love to smoke a cigarette that isn’t going to kill them if they intend to continue with the habit, whilst there are millions of course who would love to quit smoking altogether.

Everything I have read about the electronic cigarette so far seems to promote both of these ideas strongly. A cigarette you can continue to smoke without inhaling all the harmful toxins, enabling a smoker to continue their habit without worrying about the muddy tar accumulating in their lungs or a cigarette that can actually help wean a smoker off “regular” cigarettes by allowing the user to gradually reduce the amounts of nicotine taken in thanks to the handy cartridge system an electronic cigarette uses.

It is obvious that the potential of these controversial electronic cigarettes is massive. Perhaps even the breakthrough of the century! So why are we still waiting for answers? If health organisations are saying they have not yet been tested, why not? If the potential here really is off the chart, why isn’t there a frantic dash from organisations and companies to be the first to declare the electronic cigarette officially safe?

Perhaps when all is said and done, it is sadly all about politics because organisations don’t seem to be prepared to declare the product categorically unsafe either!

In conclusion to a very meaningful and personal viewpoint, I hope that the electronic cigarette is proven to be as safe and radically life changing as the companies claim and the sooner the better, for everyone!

Electronic Cigarette – Interview with a Vaper

In the United States, the increasing popularity of the electronic cigarette shows no sign of abating, despite being surrounded by controversy and difficulty.

The word “Vape” has been used in the past in reference to other smoking devices. In America the term is now being adopted to describe the activity of smoking an e cigarette. The Urban dictionary defines it as such, “To inhale vapor from E-cigarettes. Used because “smoking” an E-cig doesn’t apply as there is no smoke only vapor.”

What follows are excerpts from a conversation I had with some ex smokers or vapers on an e cigarette forum. I have written a series of articles (see the electronic cigarette story articles) on the subject and as some of my readers will know I hold a very personal interest in what may happen in the future of the e cig.

My goal during this conversation was to get some real hands on information from the people that this product is squarely aimed at, namely, addicted smokers who find it difficult to quit a habit that may have blighted them for years, yet long to be rid of the harmful toxins that have been invading their bodies.

I explained to the group why I was writing and what I wanted to achieve and that the only way to delve deep into the heart of the matter was to speak to the people on the frontline.

I have removed the names of the people but their comments are unedited. My title should actually read “Interview with a Few Vapers”!

Spidergoose: So these electronic cigarettes really work huh?

Ex Smoker 1: I can’t speak for everyone, but almost 40 years of smoking 2 packs a day, the patch/gum/lozenge/hypnosis did not work for me. The day I picked up vaping was the last puff I had on a cigarette. Cold turkey and no withdrawal.

Spidergoose: that sounds incredible, what is it that makes it work then where all the other stuff fails? Is it the combo of nicotine being present plus the actual going through the motions of imitating the smoking process?

Ex Smoker 1: exactly! And satisfying the oral fixation, and the habit of having something in your hand.

Spidergoose: I should explain that although I am a non smoker, I do have a very real interest in the subject as my dad who never smoked a cigarette in his life died as a result of passive smoking.

Ex Smoker 2: I smoked 2pks day for 30 years and have not had a cig for …hmmmmm 2 months TODAY! I AM SO excited!

Spidergoose: 2 months? Is that the date you started or did it take a while?

Ex Smoker 2: heck yea…as soon as I got it! Arrived April 4th….used next day it was a Sunday!

Spidergoose: I have written articles wondering why there is so much opposition to these things when quite evidently even from this conversation; they have the potential to not just change lives but the world too!

Ex Smoker 1: You can vape indoors or in your car…No yucky residue. Your breath and clothes don’t stink…And another positive side effect, I can keep my car stereo down on the volume, I don’t have to have my windows open to let the smoke out.

Ex Smoker 3: and it’s safe around the kiddies!

Ex Smoker 1: One negative effect….I can taste flavours now that I haven’t been able to taste in decades. Makes me want to eat more! Of course, I started out at 6′2″, 160 pounds…a bit skinny, so I can afford to put on a few pounds! (Laughs out loud)

Ex Smoker 3: hoping to get to no nicotine carts (electronic cigarettes have removable nicotine cartridges that are available in varying strengths including one which is nicotine free) in a few months!

When using electronic cigarettes, you have to keep its horizontal position as much as possible to prevent inhaling the liquid into your mouth. Once you notice that the LED is dimming, it only goes to show that you are running out of battery.
