This is a common myth spread by a number of companies, it is simply false. Depending on the style of electronic cigarette, one-pack-a-day smokers can expect to use two or three cartridges on the “pen-style”, and as much as 5 cartridges for a super-mini style device.

• You can smoke an e-cigarette ANYWHERE

While it is true that these products make no second-hand smoke, since nothing is burning, it is advisable to ask permission before attempting to use your electronic cigarette in certain situations to avoid confusion. People are generally accepting once they are informed about the product.

• They are FDA approved

This is another myth, as is “electronic cigarettes fall outside the jurisdiction of the FDA and TTB”. In fact, they are being investigated by the FDA and there is a good possibility that they will be classified as a “new drug”. This means that companies selling them may need to fund testing of their products.

• The smoke is only “water vapor”

This myth has been touted by many companies selling these products. While the smoke-like fog produced is assumed by most to be safer than cigarettes, it contains more than mere water vapor and nicotine. The fog effect comes from propylene glycol, the same chemical used to make fog machine juice. Additional ingredients are nicotine, preservative chemicals, and numerous flavorings.
